The Bucket Theory: Cellular Health and Detoxification

During my online and in office consultations with patients that have chronic health issues, I will review their lab and genetic testing and discuss the bucket theory and its impact on cellular health, inflammation and detoxification.

The bucket theory simply stated is that we were all born with a certain size bucket. Our genetics in part control what size bucket we all start with. For example if you were born with multiple snps or genetic susceptibilities in methylation, (MTHFR) detoxification, (CYP1; CYP2) GSTM) removal of pesticides. (PON1), breakdown of neurotransmitters and estrogen (COMT), this will ultimately affect the size of your bucket.

This bucket begins to get filled up while in the womb as toxins such as mercury and lead can be passed down from the mother to the child. This was confirmed with the CCCEH study that suggests that chemicals are passed through the cord blood.

In fact, a follow up study by the Environmental Working Group found over 232 chemicals in the cord blood of 10 babies. There were chemicals found in shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics, plastics, electronic, cell phone and computers.

The bucket continues to get filled with our schedule of vaccination from birth to 15 months. During this time we are given numerous vaccines. These vaccines can have formaldehyde, mercury and or aluminum. Remember, if genetically susceptible the tolerance will be reduced and the bucket will continue to get filled up.

The bombardment of chemicals, pesticides, molds, food additives, air and water quality can all contribute to the bucket filling up. Our bodies are designed to handle a lot but sometimes there is just too much exposure coupled with genetics creating and inflammatory cascade.

This can lead to a host of problems to include detoxification issues, mitochondrial or fatigue issues, and neurotransmitter issues contributing to sleep problems, anxiety and or depression.

The cell gets affected first. There are just too many toxins coming in and not a healthy enough system to move them out. The brain, immune system and musculoskeletal system can all become compromised

Again, we are all born with a certain size bucket and a set of genes that determine not only the size of the bucket but also how effectively we can handle the overflowing of the bucket.

There are also events in life to include emotional stress and physical trauma that can exacerbate the problem.

We must limit our exposure and support the cell level to keep the bucket from overflowing.

More and more kid and adults are suffering from fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, depression, autoimmune issues, ADHD, Autism, hormonal problems due to inflammation within the cell and our inability to handle the toxins.

The 3 main causes of inflammation are

  1. Sugar

  2. Bad Fats

  3. Toxins

The first two causes of inflammation are easy to address. Reduce the intake of sugar and avoid trans fats. The focus is on healthy fats such as avocado, coconut oil and nuts.

Toxic load is the major cause of inflammation. There are so many of us now that are so toxic that we have difficulty moving nutrients, insulin, hormones in and out of the cell to keep it healthy. We must reduce not only the flow of the toxins but we need to improve the removal so they don’t stagnate and create so much garbage in the cell there is not room for the stuff we need to get into the cell.

We recommend a complete cellular detoxification. Simple detox programs that are trendy and just not suitable to do the job.

The process as I mentioned is two fold:

  1. Reduce exposure

  2. Detox the Cell to improve the cell membrane and the cells ability to produce energy and remove waste as well as a healthy exchange of nutrients, minerals and hormones

Some Tips to Reduce Exposure

  1. Eat organic

  2. Avoid Tap Water

  3. Drink Filtered Water

  4. Add filter to Shower Head

  5. Avoid Cosmetics and Lotions with Chemicals

  6. Avoid deodorants with aluminum

  7. Avoid Plastics

Cell Health:

  1. Glutathione:  The major antioxidant in the body

  2. Activated Charcoal or binding agents to remove toxins.

  3. Multi Mineral trace and essential minerals

  4. Mitochondrial Support- alpha lipoic acid, B1, B2, COQ10 and PQQ.

  5. Methylation support- B12, Folate,

  6. Intermittent Fasting:  Avoid Eating after 7 pm and do not eat until noon the following day

  7. Reduce Stress with meditation, prayer or therapy

  8. Sleep 7-8 hours per night

  9. Exercise 20-30 minutes, 5-6 days per week

  10.  Infra red saunas

  11. Grounding Techniques

Some events in life that cause the bucket to overflow-
Moving
Trauma
Changing Jobs
Loss of loved one
Pregnancy
Menopause

For chronic health issues the bucket must not spill over creating multiple problems. As the individual becomes more toxic there is an increasing amount of food and chemical sensitivities, connective tissue disorders, mast cell activation, autonomic dysfunction and autoimmune issues.

It is important to perform proper testing and discover the true cause and not just fix the symptoms. Genetics is an important part to this equation as it personalizes the therapies and treatment to you.

We offer at home online programs to help you navigate your way back to good health. At the cornerstone of our program is cellular health and proper detoxification.

A Comprehensive Approach

As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and Board Certified in Integrative Medicine, Dr. Veselak has found that successful treatment is the result of finding the source of the problem, and not covering the symptoms with medications.

With all chronic pain patients there is an underlying component that must be addressed if the patient is ever going to respond to conservative care and live a life without medications.
