How can we protect the aging brain and implement effective strategies to recover and improve brain health?
Have you noticed more fatigue when reading, driving or working? Have you become more sensitive to bright lights or loud noise? Has your balance, memory or focus begun to change?
These can all be important because prior to losing function we begin to lose endurance of the brain. As we age we all will develop some degree of neurodegeneration, resulting in loss of neurons and loss of function.
However, neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s is different. There is a specific underlying disease process that leads to a build up of extra proteins, like Tau Proteins, that impact cell function
Alzheimer’s is an epidemic affecting over 5.5 million Americans. They project that 50% of us will get it and drugs have a very limited effectiveness.
Alzheimer’s is THE MOST EXPENSIVE CONDITION IN THE NATION.
There is a particular gene the APOE gene, which has become a predictor towards the disease. There are several variants of the APOE gene, 2, 3, 4 and combinations of each of these. For example 2/2 , 3/3 or 2/3 and so on. Research suggests that if you have the APOE 4/4 that there is a 90% chance of developing Alzheimer’s at age 65.
This is frightening until recently Dr. Bresden out of UCLA published in the Journal of Aging a reversal of cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s.
What this means is if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s and have the APOE 4/4 gene, there are things that you can do prior to developing the disease to help prevent it.
This needs to be a priority the rest of your life. No longer are your genes your destiny. You must take immediate action steps to support the weak links.
What Does A Healthy Brain Need?
-
Proper Glucose
-
Proper Oxygen
-
Proper Neurotransmitters
-
Proper Activation
-
Inflammation Free Environment
What are the action steps:
-
Look at biomarkers for inflammation in the brain. These inflammatory markers can be measured through blood and urine tests.
-
Heal your gut! There is constant communication between the gut and brain. The rule of thumb is, if gut is not healthy, brain is not healthy and if brain is not healthy then gut is not healthy.
-
Balance Hormones and Neurotransmitters
-
Take anti-inflammatory supplements every day
-
Get Plenty of Sleep, preferably 8 hours per day
-
Control stress with mediation, yoga, belly breathing
-
Exercise on a regular basis
In my opinion knowledge is power and knowing that you have the APOE 4/4 will allow you to put into place action steps now to prevent this disease from affecting you and others that are close to you.
Call us to have your genes tested and reviewed. This is one part of our brain enhancement program along with diet and lifestyle recommendations. We also address other issues such as balance, focus, attention and memory.
