Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and Its Benefits for POTS

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase in heart rate that occurs upon standing, often accompanied by symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and cognitive challenges. While traditional treatments focus on hydration, salt intake, medications, and physical therapy, an emerging complementary approach gaining attention is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing oxygen delivery throughout the body. This enhanced oxygenation can support healing, reduce inflammation, and improve cellular function.

How HBOT Benefits Individuals with POTS:

  1. Improved Blood Flow and Circulation: Increased oxygen saturation helps improve overall circulation, reducing symptoms associated with poor blood flow that commonly occur in POTS.
  2. Enhanced Autonomic Function: HBOT may support the autonomic nervous system, which is often dysregulated in POTS patients, helping restore balance between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) responses.
  3. Reduced Fatigue and Improved Energy Levels: By optimizing cellular energy production through increased oxygen availability, HBOT can significantly alleviate fatigue, one of the most debilitating symptoms of POTS.
  4. Cognitive Clarity and Reduced Brain Fog: Enhanced oxygenation can benefit cognitive functions, reducing the “brain fog” many POTS sufferers experience, thus improving overall quality of life and functionality.
  5. Anti-inflammatory Effects: Inflammation often contributes to the symptoms and severity of POTS. HBOT has notable anti-inflammatory properties, potentially reducing symptom flare-ups and promoting overall health.

HBOT represents a valuable, complementary therapy for individuals living with POTS. By addressing underlying issues like circulation, autonomic balance, inflammation, and cellular health, HBOT provides a holistic approach that may significantly enhance quality of life
