When your tests are normal but you are not

You have had the workup. Bloodwork, imaging, maybe a tilt table or a referral to a specialist. Everything comes back within range, and you are told there is nothing structurally wrong.

But you still cannot stand up without your heart racing. You still lose your balance turning a corner. You still lose words mid-sentence by two in the afternoon.

Standard testing is built to find disease. It is not built to measure how well your nervous system is functioning — how it adapts, regulates, and recovers. That gap is where functional neurology works.

What functional neurology is

Functional neurology is a rehabilitation approach that assesses how different regions of the nervous system are performing and applies targeted exercises to improve that performance.

Rather than looking only for damage, we measure function: how your eyes track and coordinate, how your balance system responds to challenge, how your autonomic nervous system handles a change in position, how the two sides of your brain compare under load.

Where we find asymmetry or poor adaptation, we train it — the same principle as physical rehabilitation, applied to neurological pathways rather than muscle.

This is a rehabilitative approach, not a substitute for medical diagnosis or emergency care. Dr. Veselak is a Doctor of Chiropractic with board certification in functional neurology, and works alongside your existing medical team.

Conditions we commonly evaluate

  • Dysautonomia and POTS — rapid heart rate on standing, exercise intolerance, post-exertional crashes
  • Dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance — including cases where BPPV has been ruled out or treated without resolution
  • Post-concussion symptoms — brain fog, light and sound sensitivity, headaches that persist past the expected window
  • Long COVID neurological symptoms — autonomic dysfunction, cognitive fog, exercise intolerance
  • Chronic pain with a central component — pain that has outlasted tissue healing
  • Peripheral neuropathy — numbness, burning, and balance loss in the feet and hands
  • Movement and coordination difficulty — including tremor and gait changes

What an evaluation involves

A comprehensive history. What changed, when, and what has and has not helped. Most patients arriving here have a long history and have not been fully heard.

Functional neurological examination. Eye movement testing, balance and vestibular assessment, coordination testing, and comparison of function side to side.

Autonomic assessment. Heart rate variability and positional testing to measure how your nervous system handles the transition from rest to activity.

A written plan. What we found, what it means, what we recommend, and roughly how long it should take to know whether it is working.

Most evaluations run 60 to 90 minutes. You leave with findings explained in plain language, not a diagnosis code and a follow-up appointment.

Why patients travel here

Patients come to this office from Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Moorpark, Somis, Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Paula, Port Hueneme, and greater Los Angeles.

They travel because functional neurology providers are uncommon, and because most arrive after years of being told nothing is wrong. Dr. Veselak has 40+ years of clinical experience and board certifications in Integrative Medicine, Functional Neurology, and Neurofeedback.

Ready to be evaluated

If you have been told your tests are normal but you know something is not right, a functional neurology evaluation may identify what standard testing has missed.

A Comprehensive Approach

As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and Board Certified in Integrative Medicine, Dr. Veselak has found that successful treatment is the result of finding the source of the problem, and not covering the symptoms with medications.

With all chronic pain patients there is an underlying component that must be addressed if the patient is ever going to respond to conservative care and live a life without medications.
