“Your labs are normal” is not the same as “you are well”
Standard lab reference ranges are built to identify disease. They are wide by design, and they are derived largely from the general population — a population that is not especially healthy.
You can sit inside every reference range and still be exhausted by two in the afternoon, gaining weight you cannot explain, unable to sleep through the night, or dealing with digestion that has quietly organized your entire life around it.
Functional medicine asks a different question. Not “does this patient have a diagnosable disease” but “how is this patient’s physiology actually functioning, and where is it drifting.”
What we evaluate
- Metabolic and blood sugar regulation — including insulin resistance well before it reaches diabetic criteria
- Gastrointestinal function — digestion, absorption, microbiome, permeability, and the inflammatory consequences of each
- Thyroid function — the full panel, not TSH alone
- Adrenal and stress-response physiology
- Sex hormone balance — including perimenopausal and andropausal transitions
- Inflammatory status and autoimmune activity
- Nutrient status — B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, iron, and others
- Methylation and genetic factors — MTHFR, COMT, and related pathways where they are clinically relevant
- Mitochondrial function and energy production
- Chronic infection and viral reactivation
- Environmental and toxic burden
Who this is for
Patients typically come to functional medicine after conventional workups have been unrevealing. Common presentations include:
- Persistent fatigue that sleep does not fix
- Autoimmune conditions, diagnosed or suspected
- Digestive symptoms — bloating, irregularity, reflux, food reactions
- Weight that will not move despite genuine effort
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Hormonal symptoms — cycle changes, low libido, mood shifts, temperature dysregulation
- Multiple diagnoses that no one has connected to each other
- A general sense of decline that has not been explained
What an evaluation involves
An unusually long history. Ninety minutes is common. What changed, when, what preceded it, and what has and has not helped. Most patients here have a complicated story and have never had time to tell it.
Review of existing labs. Often we find useful information in results that were read as normal, because we are looking at optimal ranges and at patterns across markers rather than at individual flags.
Additional testing where indicated. Comprehensive blood panels, stool analysis, organic acids, hormone panels, and genetic testing — ordered based on your presentation, not as a standard package.
A written plan you can actually follow. Findings explained in plain language, with priorities. We do not hand you twenty interventions at once.
How treatment works
Functional medicine treatment is generally sequenced, not simultaneous. We address what is most limiting first, measure the response, and adjust.
Interventions commonly include targeted nutrition, specific supplementation based on measured deficits rather than guesswork, gut repair protocols, blood sugar stabilization, sleep and circadian work, and stress physiology intervention.
Dr. Veselak is a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, with 40+ years of clinical experience and board certification in Integrative Medicine. This work is done alongside your existing medical care. He does not prescribe pharmaceuticals or replace management of diagnosed disease — he addresses the functional drivers underneath it.
